Digital Popular Electronics Archive!

If you remember all the great electronic projects and other articles in Popular Electronics, there is now an Archive of all the old issues of this magazine! Another great source of electronics projects was produced by Forest Mims, and distributed by Radio Shack. These books used to be available as a collection online, but is no longer available. You can find some of his work online with Google, but the collected works seem to have gone missing. Now you can finally find a circuit to build with all those old junk parts. If you just need some electronics education try this book from Maker Shed

Need Help With Your Tablet?

If you need an upgrade to the software on your tablet, or just need some pointers on how to use its features, the folks at Tablet ROMs are just the people you need. You can read the postings on their Forums. If you want to post a new question there, you will have to register on the site, but that isn’t hard.

Great Icelandic Webcams!

The telecommunications folks in Iceland have put together a site with webcams from across the country. They have sites in Reykjavík and cameras in other interesting locations. There is even a recording of their 2016 New Years fire works display!

Historic Abbey Road Webcam!

If you are a Beatles fan, and who isn’t, then you really must see the Abbey Road web cam. Night time is really the best time to view this site, as that is when the impromptue street actors come to pose for the camera. You can even watch folks taking pictures of the webcam, or just playing in the traffic.

Ancient Internet?

Yes, the Internet is barely over 30 years old, so “ancient” may be a bit harsh, but if you can’t find that old Internet page, then try the Internet Archives or you might go directly to their Wayback Machine. These sites are run by a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that is interested in building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form.

QR Codes

A QR code is a block of pixels that translates into data. They are mostly used for URLs but can hold almost anything data. An app for your phone will use the phone’s camera to image the QR code and then translate the image into the data. Often these apps will send the phone’s browser to the URL represented. Many advertisments use them to take you to their web site. You will also find them on product boxes to take you to the companie’s web site. There are several sites that will create QR codes for you based on your input of information. Sites like: QR Stuff and QR Code Generater will generate QR codes of various types of data for you.

Sales Infographic.

One of my readers pointed me to an infographic called Success of a Salesman. While this is an infograph being used to market a product, there are many other uses for infographics. If you google “physics infographic” you will find them on everything from How Particle Accelerators Work, to The Physics of Olympic Bodies. There are many different tools that can be used to build infographics. The Wikipedia infographic article provides a detailed description of these various tools. One of the web based tools for building infographics that provides templates along with HTML tools, is called Piktochart. Google your favorite topic and see what infographics are available on the subject! Or go build one of your own!
